PS3 Games : Region codes & Naming structure

Postby AngelicSpirit » 07 Jul 2010 14:10

For those who have ever wondered what the product codes on the PS3 games were for, here you go........

Sony use an 9 character alphanumeric naming convention for their games. For the first 4 letters, the structure is

1) Storage Format : B = BluRay, S = DVD
2) Developer type : C = Sony (or Sony contracted), L = 3rd Party
3) Region Code : A = Asia, E = Europe, J = Japan, U = United States / Canada
4) Type of product : D = Demo, S = Game

The final 5 digit part is the game identifier (including language version where applicable)

So, using my UK copy of Modern Warfare 2 for example, it has the code BLES-00683

B = Blue Ray
L = 3rd Party Dev
E = Europe
S = Game
00683 - English language version of MW2

My Canadian copy of MS:PR has the code BCUS-98155

B = Blue Ray
C = Sony developer
U = US
S = Game
98155 - English language version of MS:PR

The reason why this it can be important to know is because sometimes when you download DLC from the PS Store, you'll see that it is region locked (unlike the actual PS3, which will play ANY game from ANY region).

A useful post. Watch out buying second hand too, in case you get something you didn't want from another region.

Yup, I fell into the trap of buying an Asian BP. Totally fine up until they started making region locked DLC

Rule of thumb I guess is where possible to ask for the product code. That will allow you to check the game is for your region (if that's what you want), and also whether you can get the DLC for it.

www.gamefaqs.com has most the product codes listed for all PS3 games (run a search for the game, then select the "Data" tab). It sometimes is incomplete (especially if there are multiple variants of games) but it's a good place to start checking (or of course, ask your local friendly PSL crew if anyone has the game, and what the code should be :) )
